Database Development Key to Driving DevOps Performance
Blog|by Leanne Bevan|20 September 2018

The 2018 Accelerate State of DevOps Report from DORA has, for the first time, called out database development as a key technical practice which can drive performance with DevOps.
The report is the result of over five years of research, with over 30,000 data points, and seeks to understand high performance in the context of software development in order to identify the factors that can predict it.
Changes to databases are often a major source of risk and delay when performing deployments. The authors of the report wanted to investigate which database-related practices help when implementing continuous delivery to improve software delivery performance and availability.
Their conclusion, that integrating database work into the software development process positively contributes to continous delivery, strikes a chord with some earlier research from Redgate. The 2018 Database DevOps Survey showed that 76% of the application developers are now responsible for developing databases, and 75% of them build database deployment scripts.
This change has been prompted by the faster speed at which features can be released using DevOps. Those front-end features often need an update to the database at the back end as well, so it makes sense for the two activities to be aligned as part of the same process.
