Developer Wellness: Finding work-life balance in tech
News|by Gabrielle Alvear|16 May 2025
Good mental health is crucial for developers who often face high stress and long hours.
Amid the relentless pace of the tech industry and software development, maintaining good mental health, achieving work-life balance in tech, and staying productive can be challenging.
We’ve always been devoted to developers and to wrap up Mental Health Awareness Week, we wanted to take the time to focus on the coder rather than the code. Here’s our round up of some practical tips, friendly reminders and resources to help you thrive both personally and professionally.
Building a healthy mindset as a software developer
You probably already know these, but it’s important to continue reiterating their importance and incorporating at least two of these amidst your busy schedules.
- Mindfulness and meditation: Regular mindfulness practices can reduce stress and improve focus. These could be starting your day off with a guided meditation, journalling, or just a bit of silence as you go about your morning routine.
- Physical activity: Exercise is a powerful tool for mental health. Even short breaks for stretching or walking can make a significant difference. Consider using fitness apps, like Strava or Fitbit, to track your activity and invite others to join you as well.
- Social connections: Continuing from the last point, building a support network is essential. Engage with colleagues, join developer communities, or participate in local meetups to foster connections and share experiences.
If you’re stuck for ways to promote wellbeing in the workplace, we’ve got some ideas. We’ve created a committee consisting of employees across different departments helping to organise employee well-being events and activities to support mental wellbeing in and out of the workplace. For example, we’ve summer parties, a football club, company-wide sports day, personal training sessions on Tuesdays and yoga classes on Wednesdays over the lunch break.
- Resiliency tools: Tech evangelist and software architect, Jamie Maguire, has come up with a Daily Tracker for developers and is an excellent resource if you’re looking to monitor your mental health and productivity.
Track your thoughts: build your own private journal and mood app
Mood Insights tool integrates AI insights to help track mood and journal entries.
Jamie’s Mood Insights feature on his SaaS Daily Tracker tool provides valuable feedback on your mental state and work patterns. By using this tool, you can gain a deeper understanding of your emotional well-being and make informed decisions to improve your work-life balance.
- Enhanced self-awareness: Users appreciate the tool's AI-driven insights, which help you understand your mood patterns and identify factors affecting your mental health. The detailed dashboards and reports, including mood maps and activity heatmaps, offer a comprehensive view of your emotional well-being.
- Improved productivity: By tracking your mood and journaling habits, you can pinpoint the times and activities that boost your productivity. This allows you to optimise your work schedules and focus on tasks when they are most effective.
- User-friendly interface: The tool's intuitive design and easy-to-navigate interface make it accessible for developers of all levels. The integration of various chart types, such as heatmaps and word clouds, provides a visually appealing way to analyse data.
- Valuable AI insights: The use of machine learning and text analytics to classify entities in journal entries makes it easier to visualise what made you smile that day. You may find it helpful to see which people, locations, and activities contribute to your mood changes, enabling you to make informed decisions to improve your mental health.
Overall, the Daily Tracker tool is seen as a powerful resource for developers looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle while managing your coding careers.
Creating a sustainable work-life rhythm in tech
Achieving a healthy work-life balance in tech is vital for long-term success and happiness. Here are some tips to help:
- Set boundaries: Clearly define your work hours and stick to them. We know that working in tech can often mean flexible working hours. Especially when working from home, the lines between when work starts, stops and continues often get blurred. Use your calendar tools to schedule work and personal time. If you haven’t already, designate a certain area of your space for work and create a wind down routine. Exiting the space or clearing your workstation can signal to your brain that the day is done and you can resume another day.
- Prioritise tasks: Focus on high-impact tasks and avoid multitasking. Tools like Trello and Asana can help you organise and prioritise your workload.
- Take breaks: Regular breaks can prevent burnout and maintain productivity. Techniques like the Pomodoro Technique encourage short, frequent breaks to keep you refreshed. If you’re blocking out time for focus periods in your day, then you can also block off a few minutes in the day for a 10 min. screen break.
Coding smarter, not harder: productivity tips
Staying productive while maintaining a healthy lifestyle requires a balanced approach. Here are some strategies:
- Optimise your workspace: Create a comfortable and ergonomic workspace. Invest in a good chair, desk, and monitor setup to reduce physical strain.
- Use productivity tools: Leverage tools like VS Code, GitHub, and Slack to streamline your workflow and collaborate effectively.
- Continuous learning: Keep your skills sharp by dedicating time to learning new technologies and best practices. Platforms like Coursera and Udemy offer courses tailored for developers.
Balancing mental health, work-life, and productivity is essential for developers to thrive. By implementing these tips and leveraging the resources provided, you can maintain a healthy work-life balance in tech while excelling in your coding career. Remember, taking care of yourself is the first step towards achieving long-term success and happiness.
